Whincup's Win a Triple Treat
05 December 2011 | Jamie Whincup has again stamped his supremacy on V8 Supercars, claiming his third title on Sunday at the Telstra 500 at Homebush. It is the first time in V8 Supercars history that a driver has won championships across different makes (Jamie won 2008 and 2009 in the Triple Eight Racing Falcon).
Heading into the final race of the 2011 V8 Supercars season, Whincup needed to finish at least 12th to secure the title.
The 2011 V8 Supercars Champion salvaged an eighth place finish, managing to keep his car clear during an incident filled race.
Team Vodafone team mate, Craig Lowndes, started the day in contention for the title needing Whincup to place worse than 12th. Lowndes pushed right the finishing line, crossing second just 0.7s behind race winner Mark Winterbottom. The drive took the three-time champion just 35 points shy of his of his team mate in the 2011 season standings.
There was high drama in the closing moments of the race, when retiring driver Paul Dumbrell spun his Bottle-O Racing Commodore with just five laps to go.
Trying to flick the car around, Dumbrell kept on the gas, and the tail of his car spun right in front of Lee Holdsworth at the exit of the blind turn 11.
Holdsworth, running third in his last drive with Fujitsu Racing, had nowhere to go and Lowndes was lucky not to be collected in the carnage as he came through the corner.
Winterbottom held onto the win from Lowndes, while the incident saw Van Gisbergen elevated to third position.
Team Vodafone's Whincup and Lowndes filled the top two 2011 championship spots, and Winterbottom claimed third place in the championship.
